Cursive Knowledge: A Handwriting Course for All Ages
One-hour class
With students using screens more and more even for school assignments, the skill of handwriting is beginning to diminish.
Science affirms the importance of handwriting in cementing ideas in our memory and improving academic skills and grades. “A recent study in Frontiers in Psychology monitored brain activity in students taking notes and found that those writing by hand had higher levels of electrical activity across a wide range of interconnected brain regions responsible for movement, vision, sensory processing and memory,” reports Scientific American.
Kari will be using IEW’s Cursive Knowledge to teach cursive handwriting. This class is open to students 6th grade through 12th grade, whether they are learning cursive for the first time or simply needing to improve neatness in penmanship.

Class price and length will vary based on each project. Register a month in advance on a project-by-project basis. Open to students 6th-12th grade.

All About Nature!
Learn to identify trees – make a leaf collection. Learn to identify insects – make an insect collection. Learn to identify snakes – make a . . . no, I don’t think so! But you get the picture. All of nature will be our classroom, from the backyard to the lake shore, from city streets to backwoods trails, from the atmosphere to the starry heavens. God has given us His wonderful creation to explore. So, bring an explorer’s heart! Everything is fair game, pardon the pun, and we will do our best to try and make a dent in all there is to learn. All that we do discover we will record and journal in real naturalist fashion. Open to students in grades 6-12.
*Note to parents: It goes without saying, that, much of the time, class activities will take us out of doors. Neighborhood walks and local field trips will be common. These will be conducted to fit within the time constraints of the class. Trips further afield will be advertised well in advance to allow adequate planning for student involvement.

Specialized classes listed below are designed to be used for elective credit class choices. In a public school setting, they would be used to satisfy the Social Studies requirements for the Arts and Humanities and the Multidisciplinary Studies endorsement tracks.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, specialized class offerings for the 2024-25 school year will be determined based on interest. Please email Gary with your top two choices for the specialized class options below.
